Twelve years ago, around the same time she started having kids, Heather Garrod was poking through her medicine cabinet and found a face mask she knew was at least five years old.
"I said to myself 'Hmm . . . that's been there for five years and it's still good -- those must be pretty powerful preservatives'" she recalls. "I wouldn't eat broccoli that had been in the fridge for five years, even if it looked good. So, my idea is that we should treat our body care the same way."
Today, she is the owner of Planet Botanix, a shop brimming with gift items that also sells natural beauty products with no preservatives. She's not alone. Within a little more than year, Ottawa has become home to at least three different skin and beauty care companies that market themselves as natural alternatives.
Why now?
More and more, consumers are hearing about suspect chemicals in their personal care products and they're concerned. They want to know exactly what they're rubbing on their toes and into their foreheads, even though ingredient labelling on skin care products won't be mandatory until November.
Ottawa's demand for more chemical-free products grew, in part, from the Citizen's award-nominated series, What Price Beauty? that detailed known toxins in products we use every day. It pointed out that your hand lotion could contain suspected carcinogens that may slowly be giving you breast cancer or causing genital birth defects in male offspring. The series found that before she eats breakfast, the average woman has subjected herself to 126 different chemicals in nine different products, everything from shampoo and hair gel to skin toner, foundation and perfume.
Provocative stuff, and readers, says Garrod, paid attention. Her sales spiked after the series ran.
Like Garrod, those who search out natural products believe that the expression "you are what you eat" also applies to what you put on your body. Beauty products, chemical-free or not, get absorbed into the skin in the same way the active ingredients in the smoke-cessation arm patch does. Garrod figures the environment is more full of toxins than ever, resulting in a "toxic overload" that materializes as environmental sensitivities in some.
Or maybe the answer to "Why now?" is more straight-forward. Maybe it's simply that reading an ingredient list on the back of a tube of natural ingredients makes shoppers more comfortable because they can understand what more of the words mean.
"It's a clean, natural feeling to know that," said Fadi Ghaby, who opened his slick Westboro-based Harnn & Thann just one month ago, becoming Canada's first H&T franchisee. "And when they read it at home, the product does what it says it will do."
So if that's the why for going natural, what exactly do consumers think natural means? It's a bit of a mug's game because there are no rules or regulations on what constitutes "natural," so it's a label companies can use at will. What most hope for is a minimum of chemicals in their products.
Garrod's is the only company of the three new ones in Ottawa that uses no formaldehydes or parabens, a controversial preservatives. Exuberance by Fedor -- a company owned by Jodi Fedor -- and Harnn & Thann both use parabens but in quantities well below the industry norm. Harnn & Thann doesn't exceed 0.3 per cent of parabens per product, while Exuberance weighs in at a mere 0.025 per cent. (The European Union says products can't exceed 0.8 per cent, standards that Canada is considering as it revises its regulations.)
In the mainstream world, petroleum-based parabens appear in everything from shampoo to hand, foot and face cream to deodorant. They keep products from going bad, but studies have shown parabens can act like estrogen in the body. A small study out of the University of Reading in England found parabens in the breast cancer tumours of 18 of the 20 women studied, though the researcher could not conclude parabens were the direct cause of the tumours.
Brands such as The Body Shop and Aveda have always marketed themselves as natural and they do use more real ingredients than most products found in drug stores. But they both use parabens and The Body Shop also uses phthalates, the substance that helps give nail polish its elasticity and prevents perfume scents from evaporating too quickly. The jury's still out on how phthalates affect humans, but animal studies have shown they can damage the liver, kidneys, lungs and the reproductive system of male offspring.
But even these natural-product pioneers are feeling the pressure from environmental and consumers groups who continue to raise the alarm on these chemicals.
The Body Shop has been phasing out phthalates and promises they will be gone from their products by the end of the year. Meanwhile, Aveda spokeswoman Nicole Kaldes said her company never used phthalates and although it has used parabens, it is phasing them out. Aveda products released over the last two years don't have any and by 2007, all Aveda products will be paraben-free.
With these big names leading the way and smaller companies like those cropping up in Ottawa bolstering the natural alternative market, it's a trend on a definite upswing.
The fact is, though, that most of us know almost nothing about what we put into -- and on -- our bodies.
Bill Lawson, a professor at Carleton University's Sprott School of Business, says that while most consumers understand very little about human physiology, they nevertheless believe that "natural" is better.
"There's been quite an evolution over the last five or six years in terms of the willingness to be swayed by the notion of a natural product," he says. And that's good for business.
But Fedor attributes the uptake in naturalness more to common sense than sly advertising campaigns.
"As soon as you start thinking about what you're putting on your skin, and you realize they're not testing a lot of the ingredients that are going in, most of us don't want to be guinea pigs," said the 29-year-old entrepreneur. "When you look at the ingredient list and you can't understand half of it and you say, 'Would I actually eat any of that?' And you think, 'Well no,' but it's still going into your skin. It's still affecting your body. This isn't rocket science."
To get the low-down on what's out there, Style Weekly chatted with three natural product pioneers about what they have to offer. Here's what we found out.
THE NEW KID
Harnn & Thann is a Thai company that launched five years ago. The company claims to be the number one natural product seller in Asia and also sells all over Europe. One month ago, Fadi Ghaby, 33, and his wife Marjolaine opened their store on Richmond Road in Westboro, a haven for good-karma stores including Bridgehead Coffeehouse, Lululemon and Mountain Equipment Co-op.
On the phone, he promises instant relaxation on entering his store. He's not far off. This is a Body Shop for grown-ups. There are no cloying, tutti-frutti scents, but more kitchen-like aromas. He's selling products, but he's also selling a shopping experience and it works. It's not to the point of being cheesy, so you won't likely hear loons on the piped "relaxation" tunage.
Harnn is a line of home-spa products that includes exfoliating soaps and salt scrubs, massage oils, hand creams, body and massage creams, foot scrubs and bath salts. Scents include cinnamon, lemongrass and basil. Rice bran oil is a common ingredient in the soaps and again, has a grown-up, subtle scent. The Thann line, meanwhile, includes skin, body and hair care products like shampoo, clay masks, moisturizers and exfoliating scrubs. Prices range from $5.25 for soap to $55 for anti-aging face cream.
A sink in the middle of the room allows customers to try anything, and Ghady encourages it. Eventually, he hopes to offer mini-facials in the back of the store. Gift packaging is unique -- they have boxes covered in hand-stitched fabric with embroidery and others covered in lotus-leaf (think of the sticky rice packaging at dim sum.)
THE YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR
Jodi Fedor started researching her products three years ago and Exuberance by Fedor hit the market a year and a half ago. The 29-year-old runs a virtual office from a space in Centretown and now sells to three countries including Canada, the U.S. and Taiwan. And she's in the process of negotiating a deal with a company in Chile and a distributor in South East Asia.
She got into the industry because of a general interest in beauty products, and then, after she started researching it, she became interested in the organic side of the equation.
But what started out as an interesting business venture turned into an ethical issue for her.
"Skin care and cosmetics are supposed to be fun," said Fedor, "but I started thinking about the implications of selling something that could actually hurt someone."
In Ottawa, her products sell at the Glebe Spa and she sells to several organic specialty shops in the U.S. and through a department store chain in Taiwan.
The menu includes facial lotions, toner, eye cream, body lotion, soap and lip balm. Prices range from $8 for lip balm to $52 for eye cream.
Fedor herself has a sensitivity to synthetic perfumes and she has many allergies but she's okay with essential oil scents which find themselves in her products. Scents include rose, cherry, apple, buttery caramel to name a few.
Her products are considered organic, even though they contain a minute amount of parabens. (Again, there are no government regulations on the use of the organic label.)
THE PIONEER
Heather Garrod's first foray into her second profession came when her eldest son was young and swelled up from mosquito bites.
"I started researching essential oils and we came up with a blend that works well for him," Garrod explained. "Everything came from that."
Her Glebe-based store, Planet Botanix, carries a line of cleansers that aren't soap-based, as well as bath salts, exfoliants lotions and "shampoo" which comes in bar form and is a popular seller. Prices range from $3.95 for lip balm to $23.95 for facial cleansers. She also carries a complete line of products for expectant mothers and their babies called Beebalm and Basil.
Besides being an entrepreneur and certified aromatherapist, Garrod is also a conservator with Parks Canada. When her daughter came home with painted nails, she became concerned because conservators use a fumigating hood when they deal with acetone. That propelled her to research natural makeup and she now carries a Guelph-made product called Suncoat, that has been "flying off" her shelves. (Lip shimmer is $8.99 and foundation is $19.99.)
She offers spa treatments and conducts workshops on how to make your own lotions and how to use essential oils and herbs.

WHAT ARE PHTHALATES?
